Today’s architectural stone veneer is crafted to virtually reproduce thecolors, texture, substance and long-lived quality of natural stone --but at about half the cost and one third the weight. This course explains in detail the key technical issues involved in selecting andusing architectural stone veneers on any project where stone might beused, and on some where cost, climate or other factors might preclude natural stone. The course includes information on installation invarious situations, and techniques for achieving the most authentic andattractive surfaces and interiors, and for managing water and othertechnical factors to avoid problems and maximize performance. Manyexamples are included of beautiful, sustainable, long-lasting buildingsthat have incorporated architectural stone veneer with all the desirablequalities of natural stone but with easier installation and maintenanceand at far less cost.[click here]
Every year, uncontrolled moisture migrating into buildings throughconcrete slab foundations results in ruined flooring, radoncontamination, mold, mildew, poor indoor air quality and a host of other problems that are expensive and sometimes impossible to fix. Yet these problems could be avoided from the outset with a carefully selected and properly installed vapor barrier beneath the concrete slab. However, under concrete vapor barrier products differ greatly. This course focuses on the characteristics and informed use of the most effective under concrete slab vapor barriers, particularly the new generation of linear low density polyethylene materials that are true barriers, not just retarders, and are vastly superior to previous retarders in their impermeability, strength, puncture resistance and ease of installation. What’s the cure for concrete that cracks early, deteriorates prematurely, generates unwanted call-backs and has a shorter-than-anticipated service life? Internal Curing: a process that leverages new knowledge about an old material (lightweight concrete aggregate) to create better performing concrete. In this course you will learn how internal curing - a true “disruptor technology” - is re-shaping the concrete industry and how this simple, cost-effective strategy can be applied to virtually any concrete application to improve its durability, sustainability and performance. Brick has been a mainstay of building construction throughout history and continues to be one of the most favored building materials around the world. With sustainability becoming a basic requirement for all products and materials, conventional clay brick has come under increased scrutiny , primarily due to the fossil fuel energy required to fire brick kilns and the associated CO2 emissions. A new type of brick and paver has recently been introduced. Produced from Fly Ash, the waste products of coal-burning utilities, they do not require energy-intensive firing. The appearance, weight and performance characteristics of Fly Ash Brick (FAB) are virtually identical to conventional brick, but with significantly reduced embodied energy and associated CO2 emissions, high recycled content and EPA recognition as a “beneficial” use for coal ash waste. This course discusses the sustainability profile of both conventional and Fly Ash Brick, and provides a detailed explanation of the important energy, environmental and performance issues, including achieving LEED® points, involved in selecting sustainable brick products.[click here]
The architects of a selection of houses recently published as Houses of the Month—the most visited feature on Architectural Record’s website—will present case studies of these projects that illustrate best practices in current residential design. Topics to be covered include meeting and managing client expectations; addressing constraints of site, budget, and program; material and technology choices; and the challenges of integrating modern design into more traditional communities.
